The short answer

An Amalfi Coast wedding becomes a true Italian experience when it is planned over two or three days: a welcome evening with local food, the ceremony in Positano, Ravello or Amalfi, and a final day at sea or in Capri. Choose the town by atmosphere and logistics, since many historic centres are pedestrian and full of steps. May, September and October are usually the most pleasant months.

An Amalfi Coast wedding is more than a ceremony with the sea in front of you. It is a pizza dinner with your loved ones, a boat ride along the cliffs, a limoncello tasting and an evening in Positano or Ravello. When it is planned over a few days, the wedding becomes an Italian experience your guests will talk about for years.

Below we share two real weddings we organised on the coast, then the practical choices: which town suits you, what logistics to expect, which ceremony is possible and when to go.

Key takeaways
  • Three days let your guests live the coast: food, sea, villages and the wedding itself.
  • Positano is vibrant and by the sea, Ravello is higher, quieter and more elegant, Capri is an island escape.
  • Steps, pedestrian centres and narrow roads make transfers and setup the key logistics.
  • May, September and October usually bring pleasant weather and a calmer coast.

What turns an Amalfi Coast wedding into an Italian experience?

The Amalfi Coast, in the region of Campania, is where the mountains meet the sea. Colourful houses descend toward the water, roads wind through the cliffs and almost every view feels made for a photograph. But the beauty is not the only reason couples choose it.

What makes the difference is time. When guests arrive a day earlier, share a dinner, discover Positano and take a boat trip together, the wedding day finds everyone relaxed and connected. And when they stay a day longer, the story continues instead of ending at midnight.

  • Food as a welcome. An authentic Italian dinner or a pizza evening sets a warm, unforced tone.
  • The sea as a link. Boats connect towns, photos and moments in a way roads cannot.
  • Local flavours. A limoncello tasting or a cooking class gives guests something to take home.
  • Unscheduled time. A free afternoon in a village is often what guests remember most.

How did two couples live their Amalfi Coast weddings over three days?

Sergei and Ruzana celebrated with 50 guests and a Catholic ceremony. Denis and Yana chose a civil ceremony. Both turned their wedding into a three-day experience, each with a different rhythm.

Positano, Ravello or Capri: which place suits your wedding?

Each town on the coast has its own personality. The right choice depends on the atmosphere you want, your ceremony type, your guest count and how much walking your guests can comfortably do.

Comparing the main wedding locations on and near the Amalfi Coast
PlaceAtmosphereGood to know
PositanoCliffside houses, the sea and narrow streets; vibrant and iconicMany steps and a centre largely closed to cars; plan guest walking and supplier access
RavelloHigher above the coast, historic villas and gardens such as Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo; quieter and elegantNo ferry port; guests arrive by road, and the centre is pedestrian
AmalfiA historic town by the sea with piazzas and a cathedralCentral for transfers and boats along the coast
CapriAn island of elegant streets, restaurants and the FaraglioniReached by boat; can be a day trip or the main destination

What logistics should you expect on the Amalfi Coast?

The coast's beauty comes from its geography, and so do its challenges. Most international guests fly into Naples and continue by road, so the journey needs to be explained clearly in advance. Once on the coast, distances are short on the map but slower in reality.

  • Steps and pedestrian centres. In Positano and Ravello, guests often walk between hotels, churches and venues. Check access for older guests early.
  • Supplier setup. Where vehicles cannot reach the door, flowers and furniture are carried in on foot, so timings need margin.
  • Transfers on one plan. Shared shuttles and boats, organised on one timetable, are calmer than each guest booking a taxi.
  • Accommodation near the events. Staying in the town of the ceremony or dinner saves a lot of travel on the wedding day.
  • Summer heat. Stairs feel steeper in formal clothes in July; a later ceremony time helps.
From our experience

Tell guests early that Ravello cannot be reached directly by ferry. It is one of the most common travel misunderstandings on the coast, and a short note in your travel information avoids it.

Which ceremony can you have on the Amalfi Coast?

All three ceremony types are possible, as our two couples show. A Catholic ceremony takes place in a church, as Sergei and Ruzana's did in Positano. A civil ceremony is legally binding and takes place at the town hall or another setting authorised by the comune, as Denis and Yana's did in Ravello. Requirements depend on nationality and on the comune, so confirm them with your consulate and the local registry office.

A symbolic ceremony has no legal value, but it gives you the most freedom: a terrace above the water or a garden overlooking the Mediterranean. Our page on ceremonies in Italy explains how we help you choose and organise each one.

On the coast, the sea is part of the ceremony whatever you choose. Our job is to make sure the moment is about the two of you, not about the stairs or the traffic.

When is the best time to get married on the Amalfi Coast?

May, September and October are beautiful months for a wedding on the Amalfi Coast, with pleasant temperatures and a calmer atmosphere than mid-summer. Summer can be wonderful, but it is also the busiest season for tourists, which affects traffic, boats and availability.

We always choose the date together with the venue and the type of event. A seaside dinner, a garden ceremony in Ravello and a Catholic wedding in Positano each have their own ideal timing. Our Amalfi Coast destination guide shows more of what the coast can offer through the season.

Frequently asked questions

How many days should an Amalfi Coast wedding last?

Three days works very well: a welcome day with dinner or a walk through Positano, the wedding day, and a final day at sea, in Capri or with local experiences such as a limoncello tasting or cooking class.

Is Positano or Ravello better for a wedding?

Positano is vibrant, by the sea and iconic, but full of steps. Ravello sits higher above the coast, with historic villas, gardens and a quieter, more elegant atmosphere. The choice depends on your style, ceremony and guests.

Can foreigners have a legal wedding on the Amalfi Coast?

Yes, through a civil ceremony at a town hall or an authorised setting, or a Catholic ceremony with civil effect. Documents such as the nulla osta depend on nationality, so confirm current requirements with your consulate and the comune.

Which airport is closest to the Amalfi Coast?

Most international guests fly into Naples and continue to the coast by private transfer, shuttle or a combination of transport. Clear travel information sent in advance makes the journey much easier.

How much does a wedding on the Amalfi Coast cost?

There is no single price. The budget depends on guest count, venue, season, accommodation, catering, décor, photo and video, music, transport and guest experiences. Logistics on the coast can also add to transport costs.

In closing

An Amalfi Coast wedding becomes unforgettable when it is lived, not only photographed: a dinner with the people you love, a ceremony with the sea before you, a day between Positano and Capri. Choose the town for its atmosphere and its logistics, give your guests time, and let the coast become part of your story.

Whether you already know you want Positano or are still dreaming of Ravello, we are happy to help you see which place suits you best.
