Lake Como, Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast: How to Choose Your Italian Wedding Location
Three of Italy's most loved wedding regions, compared honestly: the atmosphere each one creates, the venues you will find there and what it asks of you and your guests.

Choose Lake Como (Lombardy) for classic elegance, historic villas and boat arrivals; Tuscany for countryside villas, castles, vineyards and a slower food-and-wine weekend; and the Amalfi Coast (Campania) for sea views, Positano and Ravello, if your guests can handle stairs and narrow roads. The right region is the one that matches your guest count, your season and the experience you want to share, not only the most photographed one.
Once you know you want to marry in Italy, the next question arrives quickly: where? For many couples the shortlist is the same three names, Lake Como, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. All three are beautiful. They are also very different places to host the people you love for a few days.
Here is the short version. Lake Como suits couples who dream of classic elegance and historic villas on the water. Tuscany suits couples who want hills, vineyards, castles and a long table that lasts into the night. The Amalfi Coast suits couples who want the sea in every frame and are ready for its vertical logistics. Below we compare them the way our team does when we help couples decide, since 2014.
- Lake Como is about water, villas and refinement; Tuscany is about landscape, wine and time together; Amalfi is about the sea and drama.
- Guest logistics differ most: Amalfi asks the most of guests, Tuscany needs transport between places, Como links moments by boat.
- The best months are similar but not identical: April to October for Como, May to October for Tuscany, May, September and October for Amalfi.
- Start from how you want the days to feel, then narrow Italy to three or four venues that truly fit.
Which is better for a wedding: Lake Como, Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast?
None of the three is objectively better. Each one answers a different wish. The question we ask first is not “which is the most beautiful?” but “how do you want you and your guests to feel?”
| Lake Como | Tuscany | Amalfi Coast | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Classic, cinematic, refined | Warm, soulful, connected to the land | Colourful, dramatic, Mediterranean |
| Typical venues | Historic lakeside villas, gardens, terraces, elegant hotels | Villas, castles, estates among vineyards, agriturismos | Cliffside terraces, hotels, villa gardens in Ravello, intimate venues |
| Signature moment | Arriving at the ceremony by private boat | A long dinner under the olive trees at sunset | A ceremony with the sea before you |
| Best months (indicative) | April to October; milder in April, May, September, October | May to October; harvest light in early autumn | May, September and October; summer is the busiest |
| Guest logistics | Boats link villages and villas | A car or shuttles between estate, towns and wineries | Stairs, narrow roads and shuttles; plan carefully |
| Nearest main airports | Milan and Bergamo | Florence and Pisa | Naples |
If you read the table and one column already feels like home, trust that feeling, then test it against the practical questions in the next sections.
Why choose Lake Como for your wedding?
Lake Como, in Lombardy, is where mountains slope down to the water and historic villas are reflected in the lake. Villa del Balbianello, Villa Erba and Villa d'Este are some of the names that give the lake its atmosphere. Gardens and terraces over the water can become the ceremony, the aperitivo and the dinner.
Life on the lake is part of the experience. Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo offer walks, restaurants and beautiful photo spots, and a private boat can carry you and your guests from one moment of the day to the next.
- Perfect for: couples who love classic elegance and a cinematic, refined feel.
- Ceremonies: symbolic ceremonies on a villa terrace or garden, religious ceremonies in a lakeside church, civil ceremonies in authorised settings.
- Think about: some villas are reached by water or narrow roads, so guest transport is planned as carefully as the décor.
- Weather: June, July and August can bring temperatures of nearly 30°C; spring and early autumn are milder.
We have lived this lake with our couples. For Malika and Valentin, 40 guests and a symbolic ceremony by the water became three days: a couple shoot at Villa Melzi, a boat ride and a welcome dinner with live music, then the wedding, then a visit to Villa del Balbianello and a relaxed day at Lido di Bellagio. Why choose Tuscany for your wedding?
Tuscany is one of those places where you need very few extras. The landscape is already there: hills, cypress-lined roads, vineyards and olive groves. So are the villas, castles and estates, each with its own story, and cities such as Florence, full of art and history.
Food and wine are part of the culture, which makes Tuscany ideal for a wedding weekend. A wine tasting the day before, a dinner at a winery, a day in a hill village: guests come for the wedding and go home with a piece of Italy.
- Perfect for: couples who want warmth, authenticity and long, unhurried evenings.
- Venues: historic villas, castles, estates in the vineyards, elegant agriturismos, boutique hotels.
- Think about: the region is large, so the distance between your venue, the guests' accommodation and Florence matters.
- Weather: spring is green and lively, summer suits outdoor events and long evenings, early autumn brings warm light and the harvest.
Tuscany also handles larger groups well. Mark and Isabella welcomed more than 100 guests, many of them travelling from Japan: guided walks through Florence, a religious ceremony in the city, a banquet at Villa Corsini, then a day discovering Tuscany together. See more in our Tuscany wedding guide.
In Tuscany, ask early whether guests can sleep at the venue. A property where most people stay together turns the weekend into one shared story and removes many evening transfers.
Why choose the Amalfi Coast for your wedding?
On the Amalfi Coast, in Campania, the mountains meet the sea. Positano, with its cliffside houses and narrow streets, is hard to confuse with anywhere else. Ravello sits higher up, quieter and more elegant, known for gardens and wide sea views at places such as Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. Capri can join the story by boat.
The beauty comes with real logistics. Roads are narrow and winding, and in towns like Positano many venues are reached on foot by stairs, which matters for older guests, for suppliers carrying flowers and for anyone in formal shoes. July and August are the busiest months for tourism.
- Perfect for: couples who want the sea in every moment and a colourful, Mediterranean mood.
- Venues: terraces with sea views, elegant hotels, historic villas and gardens, intimate venues for small groups.
- Think about: shuttles, boat transfers and the walking route from each hotel to the venue.
- Weather: May, September and October are pleasant and calmer than mid-summer.
Two of our couples show the range. Sergei and Ruzana, with 50 guests, chose a Catholic ceremony in Positano and an elegant banquet at Hotel Marincanto overlooking the coast. Denis and Yana married in a civil ceremony in Ravello and spent the next day at sea between Positano and Capri. More in our Amalfi Coast wedding guide.
How do guest count and logistics change the choice?
Many couples choose the region first and the guest list second. We suggest doing both together, because the number of people changes which venues are realistic.
- 1Count honestly. An intimate group of 30 to 50 opens many villas and terraces on all three; a group of 100 or more narrows the list, especially on the Amalfi Coast.
- 2Map the journey. Check flights into Milan or Bergamo for Como, Florence or Pisa for Tuscany and Naples for Amalfi, then the transfer time to the venue.
- 3Picture the older guests. Stairs, boat rides and long transfers are part of the charm only if everyone can enjoy them.
- 4Check where people sleep. Venues with rooms, nearby hotels or a village within walking distance make the evenings easier.
- 5Plan the weekend, not only the day. Each region has its own natural rhythm for a welcome dinner and a day-after experience.

How much does a wedding cost in each region?
There is no single price for a wedding on Lake Como, in Tuscany or on the Amalfi Coast, and anyone who quotes one without knowing your plans is guessing. Costs vary widely with season and region, and within each region from venue to venue.
What shapes the budget is the same everywhere: guest count, venue and any exclusive-use or minimum-stay conditions, season, accommodation, catering and drinks, flowers and décor, photo and video, music, transport and guest experiences. Logistics weigh differently by region: boats on Como, distances in Tuscany, shuttles and carried set-ups on the Amalfi Coast.
We prefer to start from what you want and build a realistic budget around it, rather than fit your dream into someone else's numbers.

How do we narrow Italy down to the right venue?
With so many beautiful places, the risk is not choosing badly but never feeling sure. Our method is simple: we start with your story, your guests and your season, then narrow all the possibilities to three, at most four, venues that truly fit you. No more. We carry the rest of the confusion.

Frequently asked questions
Is Lake Como or Tuscany better for a wedding?
Lake Como is better for couples who want classic elegance, historic villas and the lake as part of the day, with boat arrivals and lakeside villages. Tuscany is better for couples who want countryside, vineyards, castles and a relaxed food-and-wine weekend. Both work for intimate and larger weddings; the choice depends on the atmosphere you want.
Is the Amalfi Coast hard for wedding guests?
It can be demanding. Roads are narrow and winding, and in Positano many venues are reached by stairs. With well-planned shuttles, boat transfers, hotels close to the venue and a realistic timeline, guests enjoy it fully. If you have many older guests or guests with limited mobility, discuss access before you book.
What is the best month to get married on Lake Como, in Tuscany or on the Amalfi Coast?
For Lake Como, April to October, with milder weather in April, May, September and October. For Tuscany, May to October, with warm harvest light in early autumn. For the Amalfi Coast, May, September and October are pleasant and calmer than July and August. The ideal date also depends on your venue and guests.
Can we have a legal wedding in all three regions?
Yes. Civil, religious and symbolic ceremonies are possible on Lake Como, in Tuscany and on the Amalfi Coast. A civil ceremony takes place at a town hall or another setting authorised by the local comune, and the documents depend on your nationality, so always confirm current requirements with your consulate and the comune.
Which region is best for a wedding weekend?
All three suit a weekend, each in its own way. Lake Como offers boat rides and villages such as Bellagio and Varenna; Tuscany offers wine tastings, winery dinners and Florence; the Amalfi Coast offers boat trips, Positano, Ravello and a day in Capri. Choose the rhythm your guests will enjoy most.
In closing
Lake Como, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast are three different ways of saying “Italy”. When you know how you want the days to feel, who is coming and when, the right region usually reveals itself. And if you are still torn between two, that is exactly the kind of conversation we enjoy most.
This article is general guidance from our planning experience. Requirements, availability and prices change: always confirm the details for your date.
