The Best Time to Get Married in Italy: Seasons, Light and Guest Experience
When you marry shapes the light in your photographs, the comfort of your guests and the rhythm of the whole weekend. Here is how each season feels, region by region.

For most couples, the best time to get married in Italy is May, June, September or early October: the weather is usually warm but not extreme, the light is soft and the crowds are lighter than in July and August. Summer suits lakes, coasts and evening ceremonies, while winter can be magical in the Dolomites or in cities. The right month always depends on your region, venue and guests.
Choosing where to marry in Italy usually comes first. Choosing when is the decision that quietly shapes everything else: the light in your photographs, how your guests feel at four in the afternoon, which venues are free and how lively the towns are around you.
The short answer: for most regions, May, June, September and early October offer the best balance of warmth, light and calm. July and August work beautifully with the right timing and setting. Below we go season by season, then region by region, using what we see in the places where we plan weddings.
- Late spring and early autumn are the most balanced months across most regions.
- July and August are beautiful but hot and busy, so evening ceremonies and shade matter.
- Each region has its own season: the Dolomites peak in summer, the south shines in May and September.
- Plan B and guest comfort matter in every month, not only in spring.
What is the best month to get married in Italy?
If we had to name one window, it would be late May to June and September to early October. Temperatures are usually pleasant for an outdoor ceremony, gardens and vineyards are at their most generous and the evenings are long.
| Season | How it feels | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| April to May | Fresh, green, blooming gardens | Garden ceremonies, couples who like a calmer atmosphere | Changeable weather; a strong Plan B |
| June | Long days, warm evenings | Outdoor dinners, lakes and countryside | High demand for venues and rooms |
| July to August | Hot, bright, lively | Lakes, coasts, sea and evening ceremonies | Heat inland and in cities; busy tourist season |
| September | Golden light, warm sea | Countryside, wine regions, the south | Very popular: book early |
| October | Mild, softer light, harvest atmosphere | Tuscany, Umbria, cities, intimate weddings | Shorter days, more chance of rain |
| November to March | Quiet, intimate, festive in December | Cities, the Dolomites in winter, small groups | Many seasonal venues close; indoor plans |
These are tendencies, not promises. A hot day in May or a cool evening in August is always possible, which is why we choose the date together with the venue.
Is spring a good time for a wedding in Italy?
Spring is when Italy wakes up. In April and May the gardens of the lake villas are in bloom, the Tuscan and Umbrian hills are green and the south is warm without being hot. Towns feel calmer than in high summer, which guests often enjoy.
The trade-off is weather that can change from one hour to the next. For an outdoor ceremony in spring, a Plan B you would happily use is essential, and a light layer for guests in the evening is a kind gesture.
- Lake Como and Lake Garda: the season usually opens in April, with milder weather in spring.
- Rome, Venice and Umbria: April to June is a very pleasant period for walks, photos and outdoor events.
- Puglia, Sicily and Sardinia: May and June are lovely for outdoor celebrations.

Is it too hot to get married in Italy in July or August?
Not if you plan around the heat. July and August are the sunniest months and the most festive, but on Lake Como temperatures can reach nearly 30°C, and inland cities such as Florence or Rome, and the Emilia-Romagna plain, can be very hot during the day. They are also the busiest months for tourism, especially on the Amalfi Coast.
- 1Move the ceremony later. A ceremony in the late afternoon or around sunset protects guests from the strongest sun.
- 2Choose water or altitude. Lakes, coasts and the mountains feel more comfortable than inland cities.
- 3Think about shade and comfort. Shaded seating, water, fans and lighter dress codes make a real difference.
- 4Remember mid-August. 15 August, Ferragosto, is a national holiday and one of the busiest moments of the Italian summer.

Why do so many couples choose September?
September is often the month couples fall in love with. The strongest heat softens, the sea is still warm, the light turns golden and, in wine regions such as Tuscany, the harvest season begins. Evenings outdoors are pleasant until late.
Early October keeps much of that charm with milder temperatures and fewer visitors, which suits Tuscany, Umbria, Rome, Venice and intimate weddings. Days are shorter, so we plan the ceremony time around the light.
September dates fill early at popular venues. If you dream of a September weekend, start looking at venues as soon as you know your guest count and region.
When is the best time to get married in each region of Italy?
Italy is long and varied. The mountains, the lakes, the cities and the islands each have their own rhythm, so the ideal month moves with the region.
| Region | Most suitable months | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Como (Lombardy) | April to October | Milder in April, May, September, October; warm and lively in summer |
| Lake Garda | April to October | Summer ideal for outdoor events; spring and early autumn calmer |
| Tuscany | May to October | Green spring, long summer evenings, harvest light in early autumn |
| Umbria | April to June, September to October | July and August can be hot during the day |
| Amalfi Coast (Campania) | May, September, October | Summer is the busiest tourist season |
| Puglia | May, June, September, early October | July and August very hot and busier |
| Sicily | May, June, September, October | Choose ceremony times carefully in summer |
| Sardinia | May, June, September, early October | July and August sought after for the sea, but busier |
| Rome and Venice | April to June, September to October | Summer can be very hot and crowded |
| Emilia-Romagna | April to June, September to early October | Cities hot in summer; the Adriatic Riviera suits summer |
| Dolomites | June to September | Green in early summer; winter for snowy mountain weddings |

Can you get married in Italy in winter?
Yes, and it can be wonderful. From November to March the country is quieter, cities such as Rome, Venice and Florence feel more personal, and December brings a festive glow. In the Dolomites, late autumn and winter change the experience completely, for couples who dream of a snowy mountain wedding.
Winter suits intimate weddings and indoor celebrations. Some seasonal venues, especially on the lakes and coasts, close in the colder months, so availability needs checking early. Our guide to a winter wedding in Italy goes deeper.
The best date is not the one on a list. It is the one where your guests are comfortable, your venue is at its best and you feel calm.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to get married in Italy?
For most regions, the best months are May, June, September and early October. They usually bring pleasant temperatures for outdoor ceremonies, beautiful light and fewer crowds than July and August. The exact best month depends on the region, the venue and your guests.
Is September a good month for a wedding in Italy?
Yes. September is one of the most loved months for weddings in Italy: the summer heat softens, the sea is still warm in the south, the light is golden and wine regions enter harvest season. Because it is so popular, venues should be booked early.
Is August a bad time to get married in Italy?
Not necessarily, but it needs planning. August is hot, especially inland and in cities, and it is the busiest tourist month, with Ferragosto on 15 August. Lakes, coasts and mountains, late-afternoon or sunset ceremonies, shade and water for guests make an August wedding comfortable.
When is wedding season in Italy?

Is it cheaper to get married in Italy off-season?
Often there is more availability and more flexibility outside the peak months, and some venues have different conditions in spring, late autumn or winter. Costs vary widely with season, region and venue, so compare real quotes for your dates rather than relying on general rules.
